David James

Chairman of Cornwall Woodcarvers from 2004 to 2016

Brought up in Truro of Welsh parents, David had 40 very happy and fulfilling years of teaching mathematics and a host of outdoor pursuits.

By chance in 1995 he joined one of Roy Hewson's "decoy duck" carving classes - and was hooked - so he also joined the Truro College classes being run by David Bevan.

He really enjoyed the challenge of extracting a bird, an animal or a relief from a block of wood as well as being tested by the characteristics of different types of wood, while Welsh lovespoons are popular gifts.

Footnote

David was diagnosed with cancer and had to step back from many things, with John Samworth helping him towards the end of his teaching at Truro College classes. He was dedicated to teaching to the last and didn't want the students to lose out.

As a sign of our appreciation for everything David had done over the years, for both the club and students, we planted a tree for future generations to be able to carve wood from it. The photos can be found in our Club News section on 24/10/2019. We felt very strongly that he should feel recognised for his contribution while he was still well enough.

Sadly, David lost his fight in January 2020. He had returned to the field to visit the tree several times with family.

He is missed by all, and his legacy will live on.
